For a couple of weeks I had been watching the papers for an old desirable type of convertible to restore and drive. On Valeries' birthday (Sep 29/96) I spotted a white 66 Comet Cyclone GT convertible for sale in the Buy & Sell and I knew I had to have it. The brakes needed to be done before it could be driven, and then while testing the brakes a valve broke and destroyed one piston and the walls etc leading to replacement of the entire drivetrain. Valerie bought her burgundy Comet Cyclone GT convertible in Aug/98 while we were on a driving vacation in my car. We sure got lots of looks driving the two of them home in tandem. It had a 351 (wrong engine) oil leaker and was in bad need of some TLC. The following week while Valerie was visiting her folks in Winnipeg, I spent hours after work installing my rebuilt 390 engine/shifter in her car. I wanted her to have a good reliable vehicle to drive and it gave me incentive to install a 289 4 speed in my car while I build up another 390 to restore mine to stock with a 4 speed. Completion is planned for summer 1999. There are only 5 1966 Comet Cyclone GT convertibles registered in B.C. and we now own 2 of them. April, 2002: Valerie has sold her
convertible to another club member. Hang on there Dan, there's lots more fun
and memories to come -Ed. |
